A Dispatch from the journey

I found the Tulsa Sound

After my epic Dylan Center visit, spent about three hours there and could have done more, I found the Tulsa Sound at the iconic Mercury Lounge.

The Mercury Lounge was recommended to me after my Dylan Center visit. But first, an early dinner stop at the remarkable flame grill, “wood fired cuisine” restaurant projected as a cosy quality spot, Amelia’s, just around the corner in the Tulsa Art District. And it really is just the place. Probably the best salmon I’ve ever had. Ever. And such a lekker friendly vibe too. If ever you happen to be in Tulsa, you know where to dine. An average of 4.6 on Google Reviews across 800+ and this culinary delight deserves every accolade. (I think the name references the famous female American pilot Amelia Earhart.)

And then off the dive bar called The Mercury Lounge to see Pilgrim. For free on a Wednesday night. Amazing place, The Mercury. Clearly a well established Tulsa institution, with the scars to prove it. A pinball machine, a small stage, humour on the walls, big bearded guys at the bar. And me.

The band was a bit late setting up and took forever. I got a bit bored but the Okie from Oklahoma next to me bought me a beer and when I protested simply said: “Southern hospitality”. Then got up and left.

Then Pilgrim, ably lead by Beau Roberson, just sort of got going without fanfare and no announcement and wow, they were brilliant. The laid backness, the drive, the superior expert, technical play, the musicianship and the heartfelt lyrics. I heard J.J. Cale in them, but also their unique own, original and somewhat sad-eye sound. A Tulsa sound I was yearning for. And found it.

Then this short, friendly ballie in a Turks and Caicos long sleeve t-shirt approach me with “Don’t I know you from somewhere?” Turns out he’s Beau’s dad there to support his son. He was curious about me but when I told him was there for the music too, his face erupted in a wide grin. I didn’t stay long, didn’t need to, I got what I came for. I got the Tulsa sound.

Check out Pilgrim’s No Offense, Nevermind, Sorry if you’re in the mood. I’m sure going to.
