An upbeat run through Central Park and (another) stroll along Memory Lane.
The Time Life Building
There was a time in our media past when the centre of the magazine world was this building below. Situated at 1271 6th Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) the Time Life Building housed all the Time Inc titles including People, Entertainment Weekly and many others. These magazines were hugely profitable, some sold millions of copies a week and helped make Time Warner what it became. A bit like what Huisgenoot did for Naspers, back in the day.
At one memorable American Magazine Conference we were at, Ted Turner, who sold the Turner Broadcasting System to Time Warner in 1996 for roughly $7.5 billion and became the vice chairman of the combined company, referring to the groups top magazines, remarked: “We have Time and Life. What else is there? Oh, Money. We have that too.”
Kim and I interviewed many top Time Inc editors and executives there. Most notably, Kim interviewed Don Logan, the top boss at the time in his high level office for MagFocus, South Africa’s Magazine About Magazines.
