I’m up at six. Minutes later one other guy and I are in the Govenors Island ferry queue. Just us. For an hour and a half. Well, better be the early bird, not the worm, right? So then we’re off. I’m running the NYCRUN Squirrel Stampede 10KM and what a race! Super, extremely well organised. All the little details taken care of. A real pleasure. And it’s a proper PB course... if you’re fit. Even I managed a great time, for me.
I’m running in the colours of my new club and our valued Twisted Toast Digital client PeAK Running Club. Friends... and family!
But the value and the pleasure lies in the setting. I run around a corner and look up. And there she is in all her splendour. Lady Liberty smiles today. Then around the next. Lower Manhattan shines in the mid-September early morning sun. Such a bright and cheery sight, totally different to yesterday’s somber remembrance.
The official race images have not reached me yet. I’ll update when I get them. But here’s a taste so long.
I finish well before my planned time, catch an early ferry, my Uber waits on arrival, shower, check my big bag at the hotel for storage, grab my overnight and I’m off to Moynihan Hall to catch my Amtrak Acela to Baltimore for the Sprinhboks against the All Blacks in the fourth and last test of the Greatest Rivalry series. I rush into the station and all I see is other Springbok supporters milling about. Not for the first time today, I’m early. Way early. Anyhow, the Acela is on time, I’m sitting down and we’re off... Can I win the race that matters, the race to rugby?
